These are external hemorrhoids
In medical terms, hemorrhoids are supposed to
represent the swelling, dilation of veins or blood vessels around the rectum
(rectal venous plexus). Various factors have been identified as being
responsible for hemorrhoids, and some of them include sex, pregnancy,
genetics, age and even mood. Other factors include drug abuse, constipation, diarrhea,
infections, spasms of the anus, obesity and increased intra-abdominal pressure.
The signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids include the passage of bright red
blood, anemia, bleeding, pain, congestion and edema. In general, there are two
(2) types of hemorrhoids: internal hemorrhoids and external
hemorrhoids.
The two types of hemorrhoids
The two types of hemorrhoids were classified and
differentiated according to their location relative to an anatomical landmark
called the dentate line. External hemorrhoids are those that occur
outside the rectum or that occur very close to the end of the anal canal. Internal
hemorrhoids, the other, are in the rectum. Unlike internal hemorrhoids,
external hemorrhoids are usually quite painful because of the presence
of pain receptors. Other symptoms that follow the external hemorrhoids
are dilation (swelling), irritation and pruritus (itching). The itching is more
common with the external form of hemorrhoids and was attributed
to irritation of the skin by hemorrhoids located outside the rectum.
Other symptoms include pain (especially in the rectum) and bleeding in the anal
canal. Studies have pointed to various causes of external hemorrhoids.
These include lack of exercise, lack of fiber in the diet and increasing the
pressure in the abdomen. In addition, heredity, age and pregnancy have all been
told to promote the formation of hemorrhoids.
If you feel you are experiencing any of these symptoms and
you suspect hemorrhoids, the best thing to do is to visit a health care
facility where proper diagnosis can be done by digital rectal examination of
the anal region. However, we must remember that the diagnostic procedures will
be painful in this type of hemorrhoids. If the diagnosis of external
hemorrhoids is made, then the next step is to treat the disease. To do
this, we can take relatively simple measures such as the consumption of high
fiber foods such as cereals and whole grains, adequate fluid intake and
administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs ) such as
ibuprofen in a case where inflammation is involved. If these techniques are
ineffective or external hemorrhoids happen to be severe, surgery as hemorrhoidectomy
may be necessary.
